onway: along with onway – how long have you been on board?

I've been working at onway since September 2015.

What tasks does your role include?

As a software engineer, I am involved in the development of our frontend and backend applications. I also take on the role of Scrum Master within our Java Scrum team.

What do you particularly enjoy about your job?

There are various factors that contribute to the fact that I enjoy my job. On the one hand, solving tricky tasks can get me so excited that I don't want to stop until I've solved the problem. Even when you have found a solution, I find it exciting to find out whether another approach solves the same problem in a better way. On the other hand, as a curious person, I not only like to try out new things in my private life, but also appreciate the fact that I can satisfy my curiosity professionally in the form of new challenges and the use of new technologies.

Which technologies and topics do you come across in your job?

For front-end development, I use TypeScript/JavaScript in combination with the React Framework. I also style our graphical user interface using SCSS. I develop the backend applications mainly in Java, using the Spring Framework. For the persistence of the data, we use PostgreSQL and Apache Kafka. We use the Scrum framework as a guideline when planning and implementing product developments. We map the resulting artifacts in the project management tool Atlassian Jira.

Life is not about how much you succeed, it’s about how you respond when you fail. With this in mind: Go Niners! ;-)

onway: What professional expertise are you bringing to the table?

After completing my IT apprenticeship and higher technical college, I worked as a full-stack developer at one of Switzerland's leading online retail companies for several years. When I joined the development team there, I was involved in the further development of the existing online store. However, as it was already a few years old, talks were underway to replace the online store with either standard software or a new development. During the product evaluations, it became clear that no standard software could meet all the requirements, so we were given the opportunity to develop a new online store from scratch. This was a very exciting and instructive time from a technical point of view. I then decided to do a language course in the USA and then started my computer science studies at university, which led me to onway after graduation.

What are your plans for the future, what do you definitely want to achieve with onway?

I enjoy seeing how our onway routers, which are installed in various means of transportation, can be monitored and tracked thanks to our software. Now it would be cool to extend the whole thing to global air and sea traffic. However, as this still falls into the "dream big" category for the time being, I'm first looking forward to developing our products further so that the customer can configure them in one central location and roll them out to thousands of routers at the same time. Oh yes, and maybe I'll soon be able to hold a full planche for several seconds ;-)

Why onway? For me, working at onway means …

… working in a company that gives its employees a lot of freedom in organizing their work. Each of us can contribute his or her ideas and you get quick feedback thanks to the short communication channels. I also think we have an excellent team with qualified and humorous employees.

      Any final words?
