onway: along with onway - how long have you been on board?
Lukas Toggenburger: I’ve been on board since December 2022.
What tasks does your role include?
As a Systems Engineer and Software Developer, I have three areas of responsibility: First, I implement improvements to our internal infrastructure, for example, I write new checks for monitoring our servers and services, ensuring that there are no disruptions for our customers. Second, I create network solutions according to our customers' requirements, such as providing supermarkets with Wi-Fi to enable mobile payment. Third, I work as a consultant at external companies to train and support them in modern software development, which includes CI pipelines and end-to-end testing.
What do you particularly enjoy about your job?
I enjoy the fact that my work is so diverse: although we deal with "networks" every day, each task requires new thinking, expertise, and often creativity to develop an appropriate solution.
Which technologies and topics do you come across in your job?
Both our servers and my workstation run on GNU/Linux (Ubuntu). I mainly program in Python, with smaller tasks sometimes done in Bash. We configure systems using Ansible. To perform my work, a good understanding of network protocols and web technologies is also essential.
What professional expertise are you bringing to the table?
Previous positions in my career took me to industries focused on natural hazard monitoring and emergency alert systems. These fields are not very fault-tolerant and have sharpened my awareness of the need for robustness and the management of edge cases.

onway: What are your plans for the future, what do you definitely want to achieve with onway?
Lukas Toggenburger: Through automation, we can serve a growing number of customers with less effort while maintaining consistently high quality. Configurations should be as declarative and centralized as possible so that it is always clear who made a change, when, and why.
Why onway? For me, working at onway means...
I enjoy working in a motivated and highly competent team that helps each other grow and also likes to spend time together outside of work. Additionally, I have great freedom in shaping my work.
Any final words?
