Due to the requirements of sports associations in relation to organising national and international championships and tournaments, the Zurich Sports Office was looking for a professional WLAN solution for the Saalsporthalle sports hall. It needed to meet the following requirements:

• Fast, highly available internet access for staff, tournament directors, etc., to facilitate live reporting and administrative work during tournaments
• Provision of internet access for athletes and the public (public WLAN)
• Secure access for organisers to their own network infrastructure during major events

This is why the Zurich Sports Office opted for a solution from onway:

• User-friendly web application for creating access for preferred user groups
• Simple self-registration of athletes and visitors as well as authentication via SMS without additional efforts from the hall management or its tenants
• Compliance with the legal provisions for operators of public WLAN
• Content filtering to protect against inappropriate content

The Zurich Sports Office uses a WLAN access solution operated in the cloud at the Saalsporthalle. The service platform, consisting of the mpp product and a RADIUS server, is operated on a server installed in the onway data centre. This means that the Sports Office does not have to worry about maintenance or installing updates. onway also ensures support via remote access (VPN). mpp is a captive portal/router/firewall/content filter that is responsible for the web authentication of users and compliance with legal requirements. Using the RADIUS server, the sports hall administration staff can create guest accesses for prioritised user groups.

The Zurich Sports Office is responsible for promoting sport and operating the city’s sports facilities, including indoor and outdoor pools. The Saalsporthalle in Zurich-Wiedikon is the second largest sports hall in Zurich, with a capacity of 2500 spectators. It serves as a venue and practice space for numerous indoor sports, such as volleyball, handball, floorball, fencing and tennis.
