SBB adopts OpenRoaming: free Wi-Fi without repeated logins

News

SBB already offers free Wi-Fi to passengers at around 80 stations across Switzerland. With OpenRoaming, access is now even more convenient: users register once via their SwissPass account or by SMS, and their device will then connect automatically and securely at more than 80 stations. There is no need to log in again via a captive portal.

For passengers, this means fewer interruptions, fewer manual steps and a more secure connection to SBB’s public Wi-Fi.

A seamless digital travel experience

For SBB, OpenRoaming is another step towards a seamless digital travel experience. Developed by onway together with SBB, the service shows how modern connectivity in public transport can work: secure, scalable and virtually invisible to passengers.

In future, the solution will also play an important role in international rail travel, where stable and user-friendly connectivity is increasingly becoming part of the expected standard.

A trusted connection

OpenRoaming is based on an international roaming approach developed by the Wireless Broadband Alliance. It allows participating networks and identity providers to connect with each other in a trusted way.

For users, the experience is almost as simple as mobile roaming: the device recognises a supported network and establishes the connection automatically in the background.
